La Tablera has problems. It is a typical example of an Ecuadorian dairy farm that breaks even when it could be very profitable. Ernesto wants to return La Tablera to being a profitable, respected farm.
He has made the decision to allow La Tablera to become a Model Farm. It is a brave, personal decision.
The farm will be transparent. He is making the Financial Information of the farm available & all the realities of a farm that is not performing well, will be put on the table.
The first year will be improving what the farm has now. Second & subsequent years will be making it fly to maximum potential.
Lloa has climatic challenges. Too much rain or nothing. This will be a showcase of how to plan for the low growth periods & how to cope with excessive rain. farming is always dependent on weather. This farm has no irrigation.
This is an exciting opportunity. The Project will run for 3 years.
The Objectives & Results
The Objectives of the Project are simple. The farm will follow Best Practice to maximise profit & performance.
The short term goal for the first year is to reduce the CoP to 25 cents/litre. The budget for the first year is currently 28 cents/litre but it is conservative.
Pasture management & allocation will change to feed the cows to capacity. Supplementary feeding will change. Young stock management will be improved to ensure target weights are met.
On farm practices will ensure milk quality is always highest. There are are many avoidable problems when farming. Implementing Best Practice will demonstrate how easy this is to achieve.
In the second & subsequent years we improve pastures & refine the management with a longer term goal of reducing the CoP to less than 20 cents/litre while improving milk production.
The results will be published monthly. Initially we will compare to our budget which will be in the form of the Ecuadorian version of the EFS.
We will advise what we have done each month to meet the requirements of the Farm Plan.
This is simple to achieve if everyone follows & commits.

As the farm develops, we will hold Fieldays so that interested farmers can visit the farm & see the progress. The first one will be held at the start so anyone who attends can see where we are starting from. They will be able to track the changes, the progress & the profitability.
Farming Smarter
In conjunction with Ernesto, NZ Dairy Systems, Agso, Pastuerizadora Quito, Tadec & Nutrisalminsa, we have developed this project. Dr Francisco Gallegos will be the farm veterinarian.
Tim Downs, of NZ Dairy Systems, has developed the plan in conjunction with Ernesto & Francisco. This will be implemented.
It will show Ecuadorian Dairy Farmers a different Farming System that is easy to implement.
It is Profitable. It is easy to implement.
The Future
This project will show Ecuadorian farmers the path to the future.
It`s a small step but the profitability can be copied on most Ecuadorian farms.
It will generate the revenue necessary to allow Ecuadorian farmers to determine their own future. To address the Animal Health status issues that stop Ecuador from becoming an exporter.
Ecuadorian farmers need to stop relying on the Government to prop them up & to take the world by the horns & make their own way.
